Wire Transfers

It is the general policy of the university to make all payments in U.S. currency. In certain circumstances, the university will make payment in non-U.S. currency via Wire Transfer.

  • A department requesting a Wire Transfer must complete the Supplier Individual Information Form (SIF). A wire payment can only be made to a Supplier established in the vendor database. The payment cannot go out to a “Single” (miscellaneous) supplier. The entire SIF form must be completed, especially the Section – ACH Payment Authorization. If intermediary banks are involved, they must also be documented on the SIF form. The SIF can be attached to the payment request and submitted through Compass, or it can be sent to emory.fsc@emory.edu.
  • Wire payments may require additional supporting documentation, such as a Foreign Source Statement and W-8-BEN or W-8-BEN-Es.

The following information is required to complete a successful international wire transfer:

  • The recipient's full name (as it appears on their account) and contact information
  • The recipient's bank account information

  • IFSC if going to India
  • The recipient's bank SWIFT/BIC code (all international and foreign currency wires)

  • The Institutional/Transit number if required by receiving country's bank
  • Intermediary bank information for all US dollars wires sent out of the country
  • Additional information may be needed depending on the country the wire is being delivered to and/or the receiving bank requirements.
  • Ater initiated by Accounts Payable, based on established payment terms, the funds are most often received by the payee's (recipient) bank within 1-3 business days. The recipient bank releases funds to the payee according to their banking practices, which may vary by company or country. Please allow sufficient time for these banking delays which cannot be controlled by Emory University.

What is a SWIFT/BIC Code?

A SWIFT code or bank identification code (BIC) identifies the bank that will be receiving the wire transfer. You will need a SWIFT/BIC to send an international wire transfer.

What is an IBAN?

An IBAN, or International Bank Account Number, identifies specific bank accounts at international banks. Depending on the country, an IBAN may be required to send international wire transfer.
